Matter Megan Mayer Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that has mass or takes up space
What is Chemistry?
It’s what things are made out of, what their properties are , and how they interact and change. Chemistry is in everything you use everyday.
What is a element?
Something that cannot be separated or broken down
What is an atom?
The smallest unit of an element
What is compound?
It has two or more atoms or different elements that are combined.
What is a molecule?
The smallest unit of a substance. Atoms join together to make multiple molecules.
What is the chemical formula?
This shows how many atoms of each element are in a unit of substance.
What is a pure substance?
Matter that has a fixed composition and definite properties.
What is a mixture?
A combination of two or more substances that are not combined
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
When flour does not dissolve in water. The substances aren’t mixed uniformly and are not evenly distributed.
What is a homogeneous mixture?
When the components are evenly distributed and the mixture is the same throughout. Such as sugar in water.
What is a miscible?
Liquids that do not mix well together.
What is Immiscible?
When you can see two layers of the liquids like oil and water
What is melting point?
A temperature when a solid becomes a liquid
What is the boiling point?
Temperature when a liquid becomes a gas
What is density?
The ratio of the mass to the volume
What is reactivity?
When a substance combines chemically with another
What is flammability?
The ability to burn
What is physical properties?
When you can observe without changing the identity of the substance
What are chemical properties?
When you can observe only in situations in which the identity of the substance changes.
What is a physical change?
A change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties.
What is a chemical change?
A change that occurs when a substance changes composition by forming one or more new substances. Changes into a interest new substance.
