chapter 6 chemical reactions Megan Mayer Flashcards
What is a product?
A substance that forms in a chemical reaction.
What is reactant?
A molecule that makes a chemical reaction
What is chemical energy?
The energy released when a chemical compound reacts to produce new compounds
What is exothermic reaction?
A reaction that releases energy and heat is released.
Ex. Candles burning
What is endothermic reaction?
A chemical reaction that requires heat and they absorb energy
Ex. Ice melting
What is a synthesis reaction?
When two substances combine to form a new compound
What is a decomposition reaction?
When substances are broken down to make simpler substances
What are electrolysis?
When a electric current is used to produce a chemical reaction such as decomposition of water
What is combustion reaction?
The oxidation reaction of an organic compound in which heat is released
What is a single displacement reaction?
A reaction in which one element or radical takes the place of another element in compound
What is a double displacement reaction?
When gas, a solid, or a molecular compound forms from the apparent exchange of atoms or ions between two compounds
What is oxidation reduction reaction?
When electrons are transferred. In which one species is oxidized and another species is reduced
What is radicals?
An organic group that has one or more electrons available for bonding
What is reduced?
Substances that are to accept electrons
What is oxidized?
Substances that give up electrons
What is a chemical equation?
A chemical reaction that uses symbols to show the relationship between reactants and products.
What is mole ratios?
The number of moles of the substances required to produce a give amount of product in a chemical reaction
What is a coefficient?
An equation can be balanced only by putting numbers in front I’d the Chemical formulas
What is the law of conservation of mass?
It represent balanced equations
What is the law of definite proportions?
“A compound always contains the same elements in the same proportions, regardless of how the compound is made or how much of the compound is formed”
What is catalyst?
A substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed or changed significantly.
What is a enzyme?
A type of protein that speeds up metallic reactions in plants and animals whiteout hurting them
What is substrate?
A substance that lies beneath another substance, the reactant reactions catalyzed by enzymes
What is chemical equilibrium?
A state of balance in which rate of a forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction and the reactant stay the same
