State Control and Popular Resistance 1509-88 - Poverty COPY Flashcards
List 3 main causes of poverty:
1) Population Growth
2) Land (enclosure etc)
3) Inflation and unemployment
Proof of population growth?
Population was 2.26 million in 1525 and by 1550 was 3.01mil
Why did population growth lead to poverty?
Higher population -> More demand for food -> Prices rose
Wage decline -> More people needed jobs so people would work for less
Prices of living increased (more demand for houses and everything else)
OVERALL: Conditions led unemployment levels to rise ad more people fell into poverty
Why did land lead to poverty?
Enclosure (removal of common land)
and rack renting (rapid increase in rent to force out tenants)
led to poverty as the poor got poorer as they couldn’t afford rent.
What were causes of inflation and how did it cause poverty?
- Rising urban work forces and more jobs so less pay (wages rose prices didnt)
HIGHER FOOD PRICE BUT WAGES DIDNT CHANGE SO LESS FOOD AVAILABLE
