  • Met rarely only 4 times from 1509-1529 only to grant taxation and fund wars
  • By 1517 parliament realised how much money was wasted
  • in 1523 WoLsey was denied a taxation grant which showed the increase in parliamentary power

Give 3 examples of what parliament was used to do with its newly found power.

A
  • Many acts from 1529-1540 were passed and the parliament grew bolder and stronger in decisions such as the break from Rome. e.g. Act in restraint of appeals. Act of supremacy 1534. Treason act 1534.
  • Used to break with Rome and to prevent Catherine from appealing to Rome. (restraint of appeals, Act in extinguishing the authority of the Bishop of Rome)

Used to give Henry power over the English Church (Act of supremacy and Treason Act prevented people being against his new way)

A

Before reformation: henry was separate and didnt use parliament. however in 1529 parliament began reforming itself and was used more effectively - Gained power but Henry always said Parliament acknowledged his supremacy rather than granting it

How did Parliament develop under Elizabeth? (3 points)

A
  • Role changed, number of Mps in the house of commons grew from 302 in 1512 to 402 in 1559
  • Much more confident, even asked her about her marriage which would be unacceptable under Henry.
  • Elizabeth tried to reduce Parliaments powers with her view on royal prerogative (customary rights and privileges claimed by the crown)
