Staphylococcus Flashcards
1
Q
Staphylococcus
A
- Virulence: produce coagulases (coagulate the fibrinogen in blood, protecting bact. from phagocytosis)
- - Some are virulent due to capsules - Exotoxin
2
Q
Staphylococcus aureus
A
- Enterotoxin (a kind of exotoxin): affects the intestines in the same way as cholera toxin; is also associated with toxic shock syndrome
- Scalded skin syndrome
- Food poisoning
3
Q
Staphylococcus aureus
A
- Skin infections:
a. Impetigo -
b. Folliculitis
c. Toxic shock syndrome
4
Q
Staphylococcus epidermidies
A
- Coagulase-negative strains
- Very common on the skin, representing 90% of the normal microbiota
- Opportunistic; pathogenic only when skin barrier is broken
5
Q
Staphylococcus aureus
A
Most pathogenic of the staphylococci; almost ALL pathogenic strains of S. aureus are coagulase positive
a. Coagulase: convert fibrinogen to fibrin, which protects the bacteria from phagocytosis
6
Q
Folliculitis, sty, furuncle, abscess
A
- S. aureus infection of hair follicles
The infected follicle of an eyelash is called a sty - A more serious hair follicle infection is the furancle (boil)
7
Q
Streptococcus pyogenes. toxins (move to another flash card!
A
- Streptokinases: dissolve blood clots
- Hyaluronidase: dissolves hyaluronic acid
- Deoxyribonucleases: degrades DNA
- Leukocidins: destroys leukocytes
- Erythrogenic toxins: responsible for the red rash and other symptoms of Scarlet Fever
