standards are documents that set out the technical specifications or other criteria needed to ensure that a product, service or system will consistently do the job it is required to do
purpose
is to ensure safety reliability, consistency and quality
international standards purpose
international organisation for standardization is responsible for developing worldwide standards to ensure the products manufactured in one country can be sold and used in another. reduce the technical barriers to international trade, increase the size of potential markets and position australian firms to compete in a world economy. not all products have standards and most are adopted voluntarily
mandatory standards
required by law
standard becomes mandatory when the goverment identifies it or refers to it in legislation eg childrens toys
international standards what they do
many relate to how a product is produced rather than the product itself. outline management systems such as quality and environmental. usually generalised and can be applied to all companies
health and safety ohs
applies to all workplaces and must be kept safe for employees customers and general public. all aus businesses are legally obliged to provide safe premises, safe machinery and materials. workplace illnesses and injury cost businesses a great deal financially and in reputation
