definition of ip
the property of your mind or intellect such as ideas, information and the many ways in which this can be expressed. protection of ip is about the right to own and earn from your creations
copyright
protects original expression of ideas not the ideas themselves. intellectual skill and effort, protected for 70 years after death of creator, free and automatic usually for one off
design
protects the overall design of the functional product. refers to the features of shape, configuration etc and it must be new or distinctive from others on the market, mass produced and need to be applied for and entails a cost. protected for 5-10 years if fees are paid
patents
protects how the product works or functions. can be devices, substances, methods or processes, innovative patents are for an innovative step rather than invention. needs to be applied for, entails a cost and protected for twenty years with fees payable every 5
trademark
protects a letter, number, word, phrase, sound, smell, shape, logo, picture, aspect of packaging etc. needs to be applied for, entails costs and is protected indefinitely if fees are paid every 10 years
