standard interview and cognitive interview Flashcards
standard interview
in past, police used
involved brief, closed and direct questions that were not in chronological order
offciers would interrput the witnesses and not allow them to expadn their answers
cogntive interview
by fisher and geislman
method of interviewing eyewitnesses to help them retrive more accurate memories
4 techniques
what are the 4 cognitive interview techniques
recreate the context of the original incident -witness should return to the crime scene in their mind e.g what can they see, how do they feel
report EVERY detail-witness encouraged to include every single detail of the event, even if may seem irrelevent
unimportant detail might act as trigger for key info about the event
recall the event in different order-this prevents dishonesty (harder to produce unethical account if they have to reverse it) harder to lie when have to reverse
recall the event from a changed/different perspective-done to disrupt the effect of explanations on recall
may also provide different retrieval cues
2 additional featyres of the enhanced congive interview
focus on building a trusted relationship between interviewer and witness
encourage the witness to relax and speak slowly to reduce anxiety, may then enhance recall
weakness of cogntive interview
ethics-protcetion from harm
people havign traumatic experience/not comftoable to talk about it
nto suitable for all-elderly/ may not have as good senses/have a disadvanatge
age-children may not know how to recall from different perspective
strength of cognitve interview
research support
Kohnken conducted meta-analysis and found increase of 34% in amount of correct info generated by CI (cognitive interview)
