factors affecting accuracy of eyewitness testimony: post-event discussion Flashcards
who did the study
Gabbert
what was Gabberts aim of study
to investigate the effect of post-event discussion on accuracy of EWT
Gabberts procedure of study
participants were 60 students and 60 older adults
tested individually or in pairs
each watched video of SAME crime but from DIFFERENT Pov
meant each person could see elemt that other could not
e.g only one pp could actually see women stealing wallet
then discussed what they saw before doing an individual recall test
findings of Gabbert study
71% of the pps mistakedly recalled aspects of teh event that had not been seen in video but instead picked fup from the other pp
in control group, where there was no disccusion, this was 0%
conclusion of Gabbert study
people often go along with each other to gain social approval or because they through other person was rright and they were wrong
strength of gabbert study
population validity
tested two different populations, uni students and older adults and found little difference between these two condiitons
we can then conclude that post-event discussion affects younger and older adults in similar way
weakness of gabbert study
lacks ecological validity
witnesses knew they were taking part of an experiment and were more liekly to have paid close attention to the details of the video clip
therefore, results do not reflect everyday examples of crime
