explanations of forgetting:interference Flashcards
ao1 interfence theory
claims forgetting is due to two memories competing
these memories are either simialr to one another or are recalled and learned at a close time to one another
retroactive interference-when a new memory interferes with an old one e.g forgetting old calssmates as now have new ones
proactive interference-when an old memory intereferes with a new memory e.g put in old phone number rather than new
strength of interference theory
demontrated in several studies, particualr lab experiments
increases the validity of the theory
use of highly controlled condiions in lab exerineces alongside removal of biasing effects of extraneous and confouding variables
weakness of interference theory
