gave ps list of either digits or letters
then had to recall list back in order they were presented in (serial recall)
started with 3 digit number and slowly increased until could not recall succesfffuly in order
average STM span was between 5-9 items
found that digits (9.3) recalled better then letters (7.3)
shows that stm has limited storage capacity of 5-9 items
