peterson and peterson
recurited 24 uni students
presnted them with nonsense triagram and 3 digit number
nonsense triagram was exactly that-nonsense meaning have no meaning to particpants
then asked to count back in 3s to prevent rehersal-no longer recalling triagram
after 3,6,9,12,15,18 intervals, had to recall triagram
results were that when interval was only 3 seconds long, 90% of traigams were remebered
18 second interval, only 2 percent recalled
shows stm can rapidly dissapear when rehersal is prevented
strength of study of duration of stm
replicable-due to fact is used a high;y standardised procedure with high control over variables
e.g triagmas being nonsense and all ps having to count back from 3s makes it easy to repeat the study with same procedure
