standard components Flashcards
improving functionality
when materials are reinforced or strengthened to help resist certain types of forces
fabric interfacing
where extra layers of fabric are glued or sewn into textiles to reinforce the material, used where extra structure or support is needed
examples of fabric interfacing
shirt collars, pockets and cuffs, trouser waistbands, peaks on baseball caos
webbing
a strong fabric woven into strips, often made of synthetic fibres, used to strengthen products that need to remain flexible
examples of webbing
seatbelts, straps for securing loads, climbing equipment
reinforcement
a way of strengthening a material by adding further material to improve its ability to withstand a force
examples of reinforcement
car tyre-reinforced with steel belts
lamination
involves bonding two or more layers of materials to make it stronger and more rigid
bending
used to reinforce and stiffen a materials, triangles or v shapes are used to create strong structure or reinforce weaker structures
examples of bending
corrugated cardboard, table leg
nets
a method of folding a 2D piece of paper or card into a 3D shape, has cute or fold lines as well as tabs
folding
the process of bending a material to make it more flexible in more of a controlled way
