surface finishes Flashcards
printing
Most common finish. Improves aesthetics and adds details.
embossing
Creates a raised profile to the paper and board. Used on books and DVD covers, and creates braille products. Embossing paper involves lots of pressure and heat.
debossing
Debossing is when an image or writing is imprinted or indented on the paper or board. Involves a lot of heat and pressure.
uv varnishing
Applies a thin coat of transparent varnish which helps protect the surface. It uses ultraviolet light. It also makes a product appear more high end, and a higher quality as it gives it a shiny finish
laminating
Lamination is the process of encapsulating paper or thin card in a plastic pouch. Paper or board is placed in between a sheet of heat sensitive plastic. This then passes through a set of two hot rollers that heat and fuse the plastic to the paper, using a combination of pressure and heat. This protects it, making it water resistant, more rigid, easy to clean and more hygienic.
why are surface finishes used (aesthetic)?
To make the product look a higher quality and more appealing, as some finishes have a shine. Finishes can also change the colour of a product, which suits a customer’s preference.
