forces & stresses Flashcards
static load
loads that do not move
dynamic loads
loads do move
tension
the strength of an objects when it is being pulled apart
examples of tension
tug of war, trampoline
compression
opposite of tension, where the forces are directed towards each other, effectively squashing the object
examples of compression
a vice, chair leg
shear
forces act in opposite directions to each, but are not aligned with each other, causes parts of the objects to slide past each other
examples of shear
scissors, knives when cutting
bending
similar to shearing but the material will bend due to there being two pressure points against one
examples of bending
seesaw, climbing a ladder
torsion
acts to twist objects, force applied will attempt to rotate it in 360° in opposite directions at either end
examples of torsion
propellers, screwdrivers
