using & working with materials Flashcards
steel rule
measuring, drawing and cutting/scoring straight lines
maun safety rule
scoring and cutting straight lines, safer than ruler because of roove
craft/stanley knife
general cutting and scoring tool, safety feature to retract blade
scalpel
for fine cutting and scoring due to smaller, narrower blade
perforating tool
perforates (makes row of small holes) to allow easy folding or tearing
bone creasing tool
blunt object, used like a knife to crease card, often made from bone
paper shears
long blade, ideal for cutting paper and card in a straight line
rotary cutting wheel
cuts lines in paper and card, good for cutting curves
drawing aids
used to draw circles, curves or other angles
cutting mat
anti-slip mat that is safer to use and also protects surfaces
rotary paper trimmer (guillotine)
used to cut paper and card to size
laminator
2 hot rollers melt and seal plastic wallet around paper
folding
the crushing of the paper fibres to remember a shape
creases
the lines that are left once the paper/card has been folded
origami
the ancient art of folding paper into imaginative 3D structures
perforations
a series of punctured holes in a dashed line that allow paper or card to be torn or folded easily
die cutting
Used to cut a large number of shapes from a sheet material. A large steel blade will cut the card into the shape quickly and accurately.
lamination
The process of encapsulating paper or thin card in a plastic pouch. The laminator has two hot rollers that heat and fuse the plastic to the paper. This protects it, makes it water resistant, more rigid, easy to clean and more hygienic.
