ecological & social footprint Flashcards
environment impact of paper and board
- deforestation: habitat loss, leads to soil erosion, impact on ecosystems + biodiversity
why is it important to recycle paper and board?
- less impact on the environment
how many times can paper and board be recycled before what?
seven times before being mixed with new fibres
what do companies do to reduced their footprints + impacts?
- replant trees to replace the ones they have grown but it takes many years to grow back (hardwood - 60 years)
what is the FSC?
- forest stewardship council
- international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the earth’s forests
- provides certification for companies so that
consumers know that there has been some responsible management of the forests
6R’s
rethink, reuse, reduce, recycle, refuse, repair
reduce
could packaging be reduced to a smaller size?
reuse
can you reuse packaging or parts of item?
recycle
can you dispose of paper and board correctly so it can be recycled?
rethink
rethink your actions and their contribution on environment - buy a refillable cup, not a disposable one
refuse
refuse to buy products if they are bad for the environment
repair
can you repair a product if broken rather than throw it to landfill?
problems with landfill
- release greenhouse gases in decomposition
- take up land space, habitat loss
- air pollutants escaping can affect respiratory
- toxic chemicals can be leaked from batteries etc., land pollution
- takes ages to break down
problems with deforestation
- releases stored carbon dioxide when chopped down
- disrupts ecosystems + reduce biodiversity
- flooding
- fewer crops
