- emphasised Stalin as ‘the Lenin of Today’
- manipulated history in order to suggest Lenin and Stalin led the revolution together
- Stalin presented as the ‘vozhd’ (leader with ultimate authority)
what were Stalin’s policies on religion?
- many churches turned into grain stores as a result of collectivisation
- Stalins terror destroyed islamic groups (e.g Sufi groups were destroyed by 1936)
what happened to religion in the war?
Stalin made a pragmatic alliance with the church in order to support the war effort - censorship of church magazines ended, anti religious propaganda ended, 414 churches reopened
what did Yagoda do?
- became head of secret police 1934
- played a key role in the Great Terror (helped Stalin turn the secret police against the party)
- purge was slow causing Stalin to be critical
what did Yezhov do?
- replaced agents with officers more willing to use torture
- responsible for the worst years of the Great Terror 1936-38
how many people were arrested in the Great Terror?
- 1.5 million people arrested
- 10% of male population arrested
what did Beria do?
- became head of secret police 1938
- organised mass deportations and executions of ethnic groups
- was put in charge of Soviet efforts to build an atomic bomb

- the trial of the 16 (1936 - Zinoviev and his allies)
- the trial of the 17 (1937 - Trotsky and his allies)
- the trial of the 21 (1938 - Bukharin and his allies such as Yagoda)
what was the type of art Stalin encouraged?
Socialist realism
- art that was realistic if factory or construction workers producing raw materials
- books that were easy to follow and a subject relating to socialism
