Stage 1
A
- first 10-15 mins
- Light sleep
- will not report sleeping if woken

Stage 2
A
- 10-20 mins into sleep
- brain produces sleep spindles (bursts of brain waves)
- decrease in body temperature and heart rate

Stage 3
A
- start of deep sleep
- slow waves (delta waves) produced
- unresponsive and hard to wake

Stage 5 (REM)
A
- 90 mins into sleep
- eyes move rapidly beneath eyelids
- body paralysed
- dreaming occurs

A
- cycle repeats 4-5 times
- with each subsequent cycle, less time is spent in REM
