Stage 1 - Asocial Stage
-behaviour towards humans and inanimate objects are similar
-show preference towards familiar people
Stage 2 - Indscriminate Attachment
-2-7 months begin displaying obvious social behaviours
-accept comfort from anyone
-no separation anxiety
Stage 3 - Specific Attachment
-attachment to one person
-stranger anxiety when af is absent
-primary attachment- 65% mother
Stage 4 - Multiple Attachment
-after first attachment, start to extend behaviour with other people-secondary attachments
Schafer and Emerson’s research
Procedure- study involved 60 babies from Glasgow
Researchers visited every month for 1 year and at 18 months
-researchers asked about protests shown in seven everyday separations
-was designed to measure babies attachment
-research assessed stranger anxiety
Findings- identified four stages in development of infant behaviour
