Animal Studies of Attachment AO1 Flashcards
Lorenz’ research
P- set up experiment
randomly divided goose eggs
1/2 with Mum, 1/2 with Lorenz
F- E group followed Lorenz
C- group followed Mum
even when mixed
Sexual Imprinting
investigated relationship between imprinting and adult male preferences
observed birds that imprinted on humans later displayed courtship towards humans
Study
peacock saw tortoise first
adult bird would only direct courtship towards giant tortoise
Harlow’s research
P- 26 baby monkeys
One mother- plain wire and milk
One mother- cloth cover and milk
F- monkeys cuddled cloth over plain wire. Found comfort when frightened showed ‘contact comfort’ was more important than food
Mentally deprived as adults
Harlow followed mother deprived monkeys into adulthood
Found severe consequences
Monkeys with plain wire were the most dysfunctional
Even cloth monkeys didn’t develop normal behaviour
More aggressive, less sociable
Later neglected their young and some killed them
Critical period for normal development
Mother figure had to be introduced within 90 days for attachment to form
Damage done by early deprivation become irreversible
