Bowlby's Theory AO1 Flashcards
Bowlby’s belief
-disagrees with learning theory of attachment
-formation of attachment is innate, necessary for survival
-attachment is adaptive, came up with monotropic theory
Monotropy
-the attachment to this 1 cg is different, most important bond
-more time spent with 1cg, infant development will be better
-infants have one special bond, usually mother
Continuity hypothesis
-as the infant is attached to one cg, should be a continuity in their attachment
-infant shouldn’t be separated from this 1 af
-1 cg should provide care for infant, responsive all the time
Social releaser
-infants are born with a set of ‘cute’ features
-use these features to capture attention of caregivers
-more likely to interact if infants appear to be cute
Critical period
-limited window for attachment to develop
-takes place quicker (6 months)
-2 years old, sensitive period
-if attachments isn’t formed, more difficult to form healthy one in later life
Internal working model
-child forms mental representation of their attachment with 1 cg
-serves as a model for future relationships
-affects how child will choose to parent in the future
