Stability Flashcards
What is stability?
tendency of an airplane in flight to remain level, straight, upright and return to its normal attitude if displaced without correction from the pilot
What is static stability?
initial tendency of an airplane when disturbed to be able to return back to its original position (wave motion)
What are stability characteristics?
When the airplane is displaced its stability characteristics depend on how it is going to react and go back to its normal attitude
What is dynamic stability?
overall tendency of an airplane to return to its original position (diminishing wave)
What are the three types of stability?
1) Positive
2) Neutral
3) Negative
What is positive stability?
when the airplane develop forces or moments which tend to restore it back to its original position
What is neutral stability?
When the restoring forces are absent and the airplane neither moves away or return back to its original position
What is negative stability?
when the airplane develops forces or moments that pushes it further away from its original position
What is another word for negative stability?
instability
How do you tell if an airplane has negative dynamic stability?
When there is a disturbance and the airplane has increasing up and down movements until it eventually stalls or enters a dangerous drive. Becomes unstable
How does an airplane become unstable and what causes it?
when there is a change in the position of the center of gravity
Caused by consumption of fuel or improper disposition etc.
the affect of stability could be..
1) longitudinal
2) lateral
3) directional
all depends on the weather disturbance and if it affected the airframe in the pitching, rolling, or yawing part of the plane
