longitudinal stabilty Flashcards
What is longitudinal stability?
it is stability around the LATERAL AXIS and is called PITCH STABILTIY
How do airplanes obtain longitudinal stability?
airplanes were designed to be nosed heavy when correctly loaded
Where is the centre of gravity located?
it is located ahead of the centre of pressure
What are the two principle factors that influence longitudinal stability?
1) Size and position of the horizontal stability (tailplane)
2) Position of the centre of gravity
How does the horizontal stabilizer help longitudinal stability?
when angle of attack is increased due to disturbance the C.P moves forward. This makes the nose go up and the tail go down. When the tailplane moves down it meets the air at a greater angle of attack.
Helps maintain lift and restore balance
What angle is the horizontal stabilizer set at and why?
It is set at an angle of incidence. this would produce lift on the tailplane
