Drag Flashcards
What is the vertical component? (OL)
It is the lift and is used to support the weight of the airplane
What is the horizontal component? (OD)
It is the drag
List the two principle types of drag
1) Parasite Drag
2) Induced Drag
What is a Parasite drag?
drag of parts of the airplane which doesn’t contribute to lift. Plus any lost of momentum of the airstream
What are some parts of the airplane that does not contribute to lift?
1) Fuselage
2) Landing gear
3) Strunts
4) Antennas
5) wing tip
6) Fuel tank
What are the two components of a parasite drag?
1) Form drag
2) Skin Friction
What is form drag?
it is the drag created by the form or body as it resists motion through the air
What is skin friction?
It is the tendency of airflow over a body to cling to its surface
Can you eliminate a parasite drag completely?
No, but there are ways to reduce it
How can you reduce skin friction?
Can reduce skin friction by the removal of dust, dirt, mud, or ice that has collected on the airplane
What is interference drag?
Where the wing is attached to the fuselage or the struts of the wings
What is induced drag?
It is cause by parts of the airplane that are active in producing lift
(wing)
Can induced drag be eliminated?
No
What happens with the induced drag and the angle of attack?
the induced drag increases when the angle of attack increases and decreases when the angle of attack decreases
How can induced drag be reduce?
Induced drag can only be reduce during the initial designing of the airplane
Which way those the air flowing over the top surfaces of the wing tend to flow?
inward
Which way those the air flowing over the lower surfaces of the wing tend to flow?
outward and curl upward over the wing tip
When the two airflows unite at the trailing edge which way are they flowing?
They are flowing contra-wise
What forms when the two airflows unite at the trailing edge?
Eddies and vortices are formed which tend to unite into one larger eddy at each wing tip
What are wing tip vortices?
are eddies and vortices that are formed and tend to unite into one larger eddy at each wing tip
Does induced drag increase when the speed increases?
No
What is the ground effect?
The ground effect is the reduced in he induced drag when an airplane is flown very near to the ground
What is something that is effective in the reduced of induced drag?
winglets
What is a winglet and how it is effective in reducing induced drag?
It is a small vertical surface of airfoil section. It is effective in producing side forces that diffuse the wing tip vortex flow
