A bishop who was in charge of an entire region.
Patriarchs
The 5 leading archbishops were in charge of the cities Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem.

Offcial church teaching.
heresy
a teaching that did not support the Christian faith.
Bible
Jewish sacred writing, the sacred book, they called it the Old Testament.
pope
Latin-speaking Christians in the western part of the empire accepted the pope as head of all the church sand this group is called Roman Catholic Church.
Roman Catholic Church
The Roman Catholic Church was based in Rome, the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The church was led by the pope.
Eastern Orthodox Church
The emperor controls this church.
Icons
Icons are paintings of Jesus, or Mary, and the saints, or Christian holy people.
excommunicated
to declare that a person or a group no longer belongs to the church.
monastery
They lived apart from the world their only life was to be religious, religion, religion, religion, all day long. They preformed good deeds, and modeled how Christians should live. For the women, they were called nuns and lived in convents.
