Sophists
Group of philosophers who traveled from polis to polis and made a living by teaching.
rhetoric
The art of public speaking and debate. They rejected the idea of absolute right or wrong.
Socrates
He lived in Athens and spent most of his time teaching. He believed in absolute truth. He also loved philosphy.
Plato
Teacher that founded a school in Athens called the Academy.
The Republic
Socrates made this plan for an ideal society and government.
Aristotle
He started a school where he taught his students the “golden mean”, that people should live moderately in the middle.

He thought monarchy, oligarchy and democracy were all needed.
Herodotus
Wrote a history of the Persian wars.
Thales of Miletus
Born in mid-600 B.C. Thales studied astronomy and mathematics.
Pythagoras
He believed that all relationships could be expressed in numbers.
Hippocrates
A physician who is regarded as the “father of medicine”. He believed diseases came from natural causes.
