Senate
The senate was Rome´s legislature. The Senate was a group of 300 patrician men.
Assembly of Centuries
another legislature body in Rome. It elected consuls and praetors and passed laws. It was like the Senate, controlled by patricians.
tribunes
They voiced plebeian concerns and could also veto(reject) government decisions. (287 B.C.)
dictator
ruler who has total control over a country.
(A senate appointed a dictator to lead the republic during dangerous times.)
Cincinnatus
Cincinnatus was appointed dictator to handle a potential enemy invasion.
civic duty
The idea that citizens have a responsibility to help their country.
Twelve Tables
The plebeians demanded that laws be put into writing. In 451 B.C. The first written code of laws that Rome adopted.
Rule of Law
It means that laws apply to everyone equally in the legal system.
Carthage
Powerful trading city and empire based in North Africa that became Rome’s main rival for a time.
First Punic War
Began in 264 B.C. when Rome invaded Sicily. Carthage´s navy is very strong but Romans copy their ships and add movable bridges so their soldiers can attack and win in 241 B.C.
Second Punic War
The Romans opposed Carthage´s attempt to establish territory so near to Rome. In response, Carthage sent its greatest general Hannibal to attack Rome in 218 B.C. All this started the war.
Third Punic War
Rome still considered Carthage a military threat. In 146 B.C., Rome finally destroyed it in this war.
