What is social inhibition?
Negative effects on performance due to the presence of others.
What is social facilitation?
Positive effects on performance due to the presence of others
Who are the 4 others present in sport and what do they do?
1) An audience - just watch
2) Competitors - are in conflict with the performer
3) Social reinforcers - encourage and criticise performance
4) Co actors - doing the sport with you
Will the presence of a larger audience increase or decrease arousal?
The presence of a large audience will likely increase arousal.
Who will be more likely feel social inhibition when there is a larger audience, an expert or beginner?
The beginner as their arousal levels will increase and their dominant response will likely be incorrect leading to a decrease in performance quality.
When are we more likely to suffer social inhibition when an audience is watching us? 4
- When the audience is known to us
- When the audience is critical
- When the audience contains scouts
- When we are lacking confidence
3 ways we can prevent social inhibition from occuring.
- Getting the players familiar with playing in front of a crowd
- Teach stress management to control arousal levels
- Improving the players focus and concentration to just the sport (not audience).
Define evaluation apprehension.
The fear of being judged during performance
