Event sport tourism
Sports event as tourist attractions, hosting sport events that draw spectators as well as active sport tourists. Two levels = hallmark (mega), small scale
Hallmark event definition
“major one-time or recurring events of limited duration, developed primarily to enhance awareness, appeal and profitability of a tourism destination in the short or long term. Such events rely for they success on uniqueness, state,s or timely significance to create interest and attract attention”

- mega sporting events and the media
- concept of destination image and host cities
- aftermath and long-term consequences
- recurring events vs. ont-time
Small scale event
advantages of hosting small-scale events (use of existing infrastructure), variety of events fit definition, need for community tourism agencies (convention and visitors bureau, sports commission)
Nostalgia sport tourism
sports halls of fame, sport themed vacations, fantasy sport camps, famous sport stadia
Sustainability and sport tourism
balancing the needs of today with those of future, needs of community with needs of tourists - dimensions = social, economic, environmental
Social dimensions of tourism
can be + or -, psychic income, preservation of traditions (dances, crafts), congestion/crowding, urban regeneration (gentrification, displacement of low income residents)
Economic dimensions of tourism
overestimating visitors and economic impacts, growing security costs, need to leverage opportunity to maximize tourism investment
Environmental dimensions of tourism
the environment itself becoming a core product (ecotourism), sustainable practices, impacts of global warming
