How can a sports psychologist assess performance and improve performance of an athlete?
A Needs analysis is first completed with client by making a performance profile where athlete puts what factors are important and rate themselves on these areas)
After that a case formulation is done where framework is made to understand the athlete fully and model problem
It can be helpful to perform goal setting and understanding types of goals for instance:
Outcome goals are results focused and are long-term. Performance goals are about actual performance and influenced by the athlete can be measuring against themselves. Process goals are task-focused and short term and can help strengthen skills.
What is psychological skills training?
Systematic and consistent practice of mental skills that may enhance performance and satisfaction.
These include goal setting, self-talking (understanding negative and positive and how they may impact self), Imagery (regulate emotion, fuel motivation), Relaxation (cog restructuring, mindfulness/meditation)
