Give an overview of Asch’s Impression Formation Study.
In 1946. The aim was to understand what rules regulate making an impression and how they are established. Also how characteristics function together to inform an impression.
Two theories for approaching. 1- total impression is sum of independent ones. 2. try view persons as whole and how traits relate
Participants shown list of traits with exact same except one word eg. warm and cold- this was found to be a central trait as warm more likely chose person as generous etc, central traits give meaning to peripheral traits
Is trait theory a good assessment of leadership?
Trait theory- undersdtaninG personality traits that enable to lead. Stodgill- summarised research few correlates with effective leaders (high IQ=more energetic = good leader) but no sig findings
Conclusion= leadership is mater of context and situation
What are some ways of classifying organisations according to Morgan?
Machine (dominates modern management thinking, typical of beauracracies)
Info processor (brain metaphor- can learn)
Culture based on values, norms an beliefs
Psychic prisons- trapped by mindsets
