The active aspect of leisure.
- voluntarily inclusion in sport during free time with a choice of activities to take part in.
- the emphasis is on participation not winning

Participation in various forms of physical activity at different stages of development
E.g. Grass roots level or participation level
What are the functions of physical recreation for individuals?
5 ‘S’ factors
- sense of fun
- skill development
- stress reduction
- self-esteem improvement
What are the functions of physical recreation for society?
- reduction of strain on the NHS and lowering of obesity weights
- social interaction from various social communities improving cohesion
- employment and economic benefits(use of facilities e.g. GOALS)
- more positive use of free time (working on sport development)

What are the characteristics of SPORT?
S - Serious (winning at all costs attitude or sportsmanship)
P - Prowess (high skill level)
O - Organised(NGB’s and appointed officials regulate games)
R - Rewards( Prizes for winning, extrinsic and intrinsic satisfaction)
T - Time restrictions are rigid
