What is a motor skill?
An activity that involves voluntary muscular movement with the correct degree of muscular control.
What are fine motor skills?
Skills which require the control of small muscles e.g. when writing, throwing a dart, drawing & sewing
What are gross motor skills?
Skills which involve movements of large parts of the body of the whole body, they require less precision. Skills such as - doing a somersault or tackling in football
What is an open skill?
Skills performed in an unpredictable environment, the context of the situation is always changing like - the location of defenders or the ball meaning the performers must adapt. Examples: Football,netball,basketball & rugby
What is a closed skill?
Performed in a highly predictable environment where the performer has full control of the timing of the movement, can initiate the action when they are ready and don’t have to consider external factors. Examples include - golf, diving, gymnastics, free throws
What are discrete skills?
Skills which have a distinct start and end. Examples include - kicking a football or swinging a bat
What is a continuous skill?
Motor skills which bring together discrete skills in a repetitive movement. They have no specific beginning or end and can go on for as long as the performer wishes. Examples include - walking,running,cycling or swimming.
What is an example of a closed skill in athletics?
Shot put, hammer throw,archery,javelin
What is an example of a serial motor skill in athletics?
Triple jump, triathlon
What is an example of a gross motor skill in athletics?
Sprint races
