Heart Rate Tests And The CNS Flashcards
What is the sympathetic nervous system?
A part of the autonomic nervous system that speeds up heart rate
What is the parasympathetic nervous system?
A part of the autonomic nervous system which decreases heart rate
What is the medulla oblongata?
The most important part of the brain as it regulates processes that keep us alive e.g. breathing and heart rate
What is the Hormonal Control Mechanism?
Hormones can also have an effect on HR through the release of adrenaline to stimulate the SAN to produce faster speeds and force of contractions increasing cardiac output. This is so that more blood can be received by working muscles to gain the amount of oxygen necessary.
What is adrenaline?
A stress hormone that is released via the sympathetic nerves and cardiac nerves to increase HR
What is ejection fraction?
The percentage of blood pumped out by the left ventricle of the heart per beat
