spleen Flashcards
what is the function of the lymphoid system?
immunological defense
return of fluid to cardiovascular system
lipid absorption
what organs compose the lympoid system?
thymus
spleen
lymph nodes
what type of immunity does the lymphoid system provide?
adaptive immunity
what are the 5 characteristics that make up adaptive immunity?
- specificity: recognizes specific target
- diversity: ability to react to many different challenges
- memory: rapid response if previously exposed
- self/nonself recognition
what are the Antibodies?
- IgG: found in blood
- IgA; found in secretions
- IgM: is a pentamer- produced as first response
- IgE: triggers mast cell degranulation
- IgD: membrane bound receptor on immature lymphocytes
what is the mechanism of antigen inactivation?
- Agglutination: antibodies bind to antigen - forms aggregate
- Opsonization: causes phagocytosis
- Neutralization: binding of antibody to microorganisms blocks their adhesion to cells and inactivates toxins
- Cytotoxicity: when you have worms they bind and release toxins on it
- Complement activation: antibodies bind to protein causing a cascade of events that lead to cell lysis
what makes up the framework of the lymphoid tissues?
reticular fibers
what is the R?
reticulocyte
what does the spleen do?
recycles hemoglobin into bilirubin for bile production
destroys old RBC
is a reservoir of RBC
forms antibodies
is place for T and B cell proliferation
how is the spleen organized structurally?
Capsule
Trabeculae
White pulp
Red pulp
what kind of connective tissue does the capsule have?
dense irregular with smooth muscle fibers
what is the trabeculae?
is an extension of the capsule accompanying vasculature into the parenchyma
what does the White pulp contain?
PALS (periarteriolar lymphoid sheath)
marginal zone = germinal centers
what does the red pulp contain?
splenic cords
sinusoids
