Q

what are the 5 characteristics that make up adaptive immunity?

A
  1. specificity: recognizes specific target
  2. diversity: ability to react to many different challenges
  3. memory: rapid response if previously exposed
  4. self/nonself recognition

Q

what are the Antibodies?

A
  1. IgG: found in blood
  2. IgA; found in secretions
  3. IgM: is a pentamer- produced as first response
  4. IgE: triggers mast cell degranulation
  5. IgD: membrane bound receptor on immature lymphocytes

6
Q

what is the mechanism of antigen inactivation?

A
  1. Agglutination: antibodies bind to antigen - forms aggregate
  2. Opsonization: causes phagocytosis
  3. Neutralization: binding of antibody to microorganisms blocks their adhesion to cells and inactivates toxins
  4. Cytotoxicity: when you have worms they bind and release toxins on it
  5. Complement activation: antibodies bind to protein causing a cascade of events that lead to cell lysis
