Spinal Cord Flashcards
where are the spinal cord enlargements?
cervical - C4 to T1
lumbar - T11 to L1
what is the source of the posterior spinal artery?
vertebral or posterior cerebellar artery
what does the ventral rami supply?
motor control of antero-lateral parts of trunk and limbs
name and state origin of plexuses
cervical - C1-C5
brachial - C5-T1
lumbar - L1-L4
sacral - L4-S4
what nerve is also included in the cervical plexus?
phrenic nerve
what is the vertebral level of the cauda equina
L2 to Co1
what is the function of the cauda equina
inferior projections of the dorsal and ventral roots of the lumbar and sacral spinal nerves that cover the filum terminale in the subarachnoid space.
what is the vertebral level of filum terminale
L2 - S2
what is the function of the filum terminale
inferior projections of the conus medularis in the pia mater that blends into the dura mater and travels to the dorsum of the coccyx to form the coccygeal ligament
what are the denticulate ligaments?
lateral projections from the pia mater that hold the spinal cord in place in the subarachnoid space. they also extend to the dura weaving between dorsal and ventral roots
where is CSF made? Where is it stored?
CSF is made in the choroid plexuses of the ventricles in the brain
stored in the subarachnoid space
what is a dermatome?
area of skin that is innervated by sensory fibers from a specific spinal nerve or nerve segment
what is a myotome?
groups of muscles that are innervated by motor fibers derived from a single spinal nerve segment
what is a sclerotome?
areas of bone that are innervated by a single spinal segment
