Spinal Cord Flashcards
Dorsal column medial lemniscus
Vibration, conscious proprioception, fine touch
Spinocerebellar
Position of body
Spinocerebellar
Position of parts of the body
Corticospinal Tract/ lateral / anterior horns
Posterior or dorsal horn
Ventral/ anterior horns
Motor fibres
Transection c1 -c3
Need vent to respire
Transection t1-9
Low limb paralysis
Hemisection or Brown sequard sun. Sx ?
- dorsal = ips loss of fine touch/ vibration/proprioception
- Anterior horn = IPs LMS ( hypo reflex, flaccid paralysis)
- Lat Corticospinal = Cont. UMS below lesion
- spinalthalamic = contralat. Loss of 1-2 levels below loss crude touch and pressure & @ level loss of P&T
Anterior spinal art
Causes of occlusion of Anterior Spinal Artery
Aortic dissection, trauma, thrombosis, vasculitis htn
Sx
Symptoms of syringomyelia
Sx of Tabes Dorsalis (tertiary syphillis and location?
Dorsal column
Sx and tracts affected in subacute Combined degeneration ?
SCD= Spinocerebellar, Corticospinal Dorsal columns
Tracts and sx ass w/ ALS
+ ve Babinski
Flaring and up point toes
LMS
Anterior Corticospinal tract controls ?
Lat Corticospinal tracts control?
Pic and fx of lat & ant spinothalamic tract
Anterior horn defect : spinal muscular atrophy inheritance patterns, gene, sx
AR, smn1, chrom 5
Floppy baby, tongue fasciculations
Any horn, poliomyelitis sx
**A symmetrical paralysis
LMN signs
May evolve the brain stem
May occur years later
Ix stool
Ant horn: West Nile virus symptoms
Fever rash myalgia meningitis acute asymmetrical flaccid paralysis
Main cause of syringomyelia
Chiari malformation = herniating cerebella tonsils = hydrocephalus
HA + ataxia
Sx of syringomyelia
B/l loss (cape like loss) P&T pressure and crude touch of upper extremities
Can lead to damage to motor damage
Sx neuro syphilis
Dorsal column signs
Slurred speech, change in behaviour, memory loss
Argyll Roberson pupil ( lost light refelex
Rx neurosuphallis
Penicillin
Dorsal Column syndromes
SCD
Neurosphysis
Folate vs b12 deficiency
Both cause pancytopenia
Methylmalonic acid is raised in b12 def
What builds up in friedrech ataxia ?
Fe
= neuronal death effect Spinocerebellar tract = ataxia
Sx of Friedreich ataxia
Non neuro or cutaneous sx of friedreich ataxia
