Spider Guard (Top) Flashcards

Q
[SPIDER GUARD - TOP]
[TRANSITION]
Pass spider-guard on the extended side (with the foot on your bicep)
A
- If you are in your opponent’s spider guard, first establish your grip on the lasso side. Grab your opponent’s belt if possible, otherwise, just get whatever fabric you can grab.
- Attempt to break the extended side grip by first stepping forward to press your same-side knee into the crook of your opponent’s outstretched leg to break their extension. At the same time, rotate your hand underneath their leg and get a grip on their inner leg (by the knee if possible). Using your knee and this grip, break your opponent’s grip on your sleeve.
- Walk your butt towards the lasso side and twist your lassoed shoulder forward/inward to get your opponent’s foot out of your armpit. Use your elbow to push their leg away so their foot comes out.
- Once your opponent’s foot pops out, duck your head down underneath their foot and in the same motion (a) use your grip on your opponent’s leg to extend it downward and (b) walk/jump over your opponent’s extended leg to land in side control. Feel free to drop your shoulder down into your opponent’s chest/belly as you do so.

If your opponent does not let you tuck your head under their foot by squeezing their leg downward, then transition to pass guard on the opposite side (the same side your arm is lassoed on).
- Press your weight down on your opponent’s legs to smash them into the ground while walking (or jumping) your legs around their head (starting from their back and walking around until you are at their front in side control) to get into side control. Don’t let go of your grip on their belt until you are in side control.

Q
[SPIDER GUARD - TOP]
[TRANSITION]
If your opponent is facing you straight on, get grips on their pants and back up quickly to eliminate their spider-guard and toreando to the side.
A
- If your opponent has you in their spider guard, but they don’t have full extension on one side and are facing you straight on, immediately rotate your arms over the top of their legs so you can get grips on their pants.
- Back up FAST dragging your opponent with you and pressing their legs down. This should pop their feet out of spider guard and nullify it.
- Immediately go into a toreando pass and into side control.
