Q
[BACK - DEFENCE]
[TRANSITION]
Escaping back control when opponent has seatbelt on and two hooks in
A
- Lean to the side your opponent has the underhook and get heavy on their shoulder to reduce their mobility. This is very important - if you go the other direction, they will likely get a deep collar grip and choke you out very quickly.
- Keep one hand up for defence with your palm facing yourself, hooked over their choking forearm to stop them from pulling their elbow behind your shoulder.
- Using your leg on the same side your opponent has the underhook, plant it on the floor and bring your knee up to bring their foot closer to your hand. Then use your free hand to grab the middle of your opponent’s foot on that same side.
- In one motion, pull your opponent’s foot up towards you while kicking your leg out to undo the hook. Once free, immediately step over their leg and shimmy your back onto the floor and off your opponent’s chest to ruin the choking angle. Do not let them replace the hook. Make sure your butt is OVER their leg before the next move.
- Continuing to defend your neck, twist your body so you turn in to face your opponent (facing the choking arm and continuing to twist).
- Drop your elbow trapped between you to the floor for leverage and either get up into side control or grab their knee with your other hand and attempt to cross over to their other side, likely landing in their half guard.
Tip: If your opponent’s grip on your lapel is like iron, worm your thumb into their fist to loosen their grip.

Q
[BACK - DEFENCE]
[TRANSITION]
Escaping back control when opponent has seatbelt on and two hooks in AND they’ve pulled you to the floor on the choking side
A
- Keep one hand up for defence with your palm facing yourself, hooked over their choking forearm to stop them from pulling their elbow behind your shoulder.
- Raise your leg on the underhooking side to bring your opponent’s foot closer to your hand then use your free hand to grab the middle of your opponent’s foot on that same side.
- In one motion, kick pull their foot and kick out your leg to free yourself from the hook. Immediately twist (into the choking arm) and step over to plant that free foot on the floor. You should be in a ‘pike’ position with your shoulder pressed heavy on their choking arm.
- Your opponent should be scrambling to replace the hook and take your back. Continue to twist and roll over into the choking side. Your opponent will want to continue to roll again to land back in the prime choking position - do not let them. STOP the roll after you land as you should land in a good defence position with your back on the floor and hip free from their hook so you can twist out and get up.
Tip: If your opponent’s grip on your lapel is like iron, worm your thumb into their fist to loosen their grip.
