Define categorical speech perception.

A

When acoustics are manipulated so that a spech sound gradually shifts, the shift is categorical rather than continous.
Infants are “universal discriminators” until about 9months.
In adults, reaction time studies show that acoustic differences may be discriminated, but the same sounds are still categorised as same speech sound.

A native Japanese speaker will have difficulties discriminating between “l” and “r”,
