Specialised cells Flashcards
1
Q
what are specialised cells?
A
- cells that have special features that help them carry out a specific function
2
Q
what examples of specialised cells in animal cells
A
- muscle cells
- nerve cells
- red blood cells
3
Q
What are examples of specialised cells in plant cells?
A
- palisade cells
- root hair cell
4
Q
what are Muscle cells?
A
- specialised cells that contract and relax
- able to change their length - able to move through a full range of motion
- Long and stretching - helps contractions
5
Q
what are nerve cells?
A
- specialised cells that carry electrical impulses
- long with branches
6
Q
what are red blood cells?
A
- specialised cells that carry oxygen through the blood and bind to the haemoglobin
-biconcave shape = increases surface area - no nucleus
7
Q
what are palisade cells? (plant)
A
- specialised cells for photosynthesis
- vertical orientation = increases surface area
- the upper side of the leaf contains chloroplasts that help absorb light for photosynthesis
8
Q
what are root hair cells? (plant)
A
- specialised cells for absorption of water and minerals
- have large surface area = increase the rate of absorption
- hair-like structure = increases root surface area
9
Q
how do sperm cells get their energy?
A
the sperm cells get their energy from the mitochondria in the middle section of the sperm cells which transfer energy for the movement of the flagellum f (the tail)
