investigating photosynthesis Flashcards
how do you measure the rate of photsynthesis
- count the number of bubbles
- how long it takes to collect volume of gas
which factors affect the rate of photosynthesis
- light intensity
- carbon dioxide
- temperature
how does the light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis
the higher the light intensity the faster the rate of photosynthesus
how do carbon dioxde affect the rate of photosyntheis
the greater the concentration of carbon dioixde the faster the rate of reaction
how does the temperature affect the rate of ptosynthesis
the higher the temperature the faster the rate of photosynthesis because it requires enzymes wich speed up the reaction.
how can you show that a plant is photosynthesising
if the leaf, after dropping iodine solution. turns from yellow-brown to blue-black
what are the trends in light intensity?
the higher the light intensity the faster the rate of photosynthesis however it will get faster until photosynthesis reaches its maximum rate
What are the trends in carbon dioxide
the greater the concentration of carbon dioxide the faster the rate of photosynthesis however after a certain point if you keep increasing it ,the rate of photosynthesis stays the same
what are the trends in temperature
the higher the temperature the faster the rate of photosynthesis however at a certain temperature the enzymes stop working so photosynthesis stops
how do you test for starch
- To test a leaf for starch you need to place it in boiling water
- Then place the leaf in boiling ethanol to remove the chlorophyll.
- After washing the leaf, add a few drops of iodine If starch is present the iodine will turn blue-black
how can you tell if a plant is photosynthesising
if a plant is photosynthesising the glucose will turn into starch
- if it’s not photosynthesising then it will have no starch
- we can then test for starch
