leaves : photosynthesis Flashcards
1
Q
why are leaves important for phtosynthesis
A
the cells are specialized to take in sunlgight and allow gases to move in and out of the plant
2
Q
how is a leaves adapted for photsynthesis
A
- has green pigment whch contains chlorophyll to take in sunlight
- has a large surface area to absorb more sunlight
- are thin which increases the rate of diffusion
- has veins that contain the xylem tubes which contain water
- has stomata that open and closes for gases
3
Q
what is the function of the stomata
A
- to allow gases to diffuse into and out of the leaf
- carbon dioxide in and oxygen out
- opens in the day closes at night
4
Q
inside of a leaf
A
5
Q
why is the underside of a leaf lighter than the top
A
- it contains less chlorophyll
- most sunlight hits the top where chlorophyll needs to be
6
Q
why is the top of a leaf waxy
A
- the waxy layer reduces the amount of water evaporating out
- sun heats the waxy layer
7
Q
what do the phloem tubes do
A
transports food in plant
8
Q
what do the xylem tubes do
A
transports water into plant
