Specialisation in Animal Cells Flashcards
What are cells?
They are the smallest living organisms in the world, They carry out all functions of life.
What are specialised cells?
Cells that have additional features to help the organism function.
What do specialised cells have to adapt?
They have new sub-cellular structures, they sometimes work in a tissue or individually.
What do sub-cellular structures do?
It helps enable it to function
Give examples of cells that work independently?
Sperm and egg cell
Give an example of a cell that works in a tissue
A muscle tissue
When do Animals differentiate?
They differentiate at an early stage
When do plants differentiate?
They differentiate throughout their life at different rates
What are Nerve Cells?
Specialised to carry out electrical impulses around the body, to provide rapid communication around the body
Why are Dendrites on Nerve Cells?
To make connections to other cells
Whey are axons on Nerve Cells?
Long body
Long body to conduct electrical impulses in one direction
What are Synapses in Nerve Cells?
Send neurotransmitter chemicals to other cells, it contains a lot of mitochondria, therefore, releases a lot of energy
What is a Mylin Sheath in Nerve Cells?
a layer for insulation to speed up impulses
Describe a Sperm Cell?
contains genetic information from the male, travels towards the egg and fertilises the egg.
Why does the Sperm have a long tail?
So it can swim through the water of the female.
