Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards
What is an animal cell?
They are eukaryototic cells.
What is the Cytoplasm?
A liquid gel containing organelles where all chemical reactions take place in the cell and it gives the cell it’s shape.
Describe the Cell Membrane
It has a semi-permeable membrane controls what substances go in and out the cell.
Give examples of things that can go in and out of the cell:
Mineral ions and Waste Products like urea. Glucose Leaves the gut.
What is the Nucleus?
Controls all activities in the cell, encases genetic material.
Describe what the Mitochondria does?
In the structures of the cytoplasm, It is the site of cellular aerobic respiration and releases energy locked up from glucose
What are Ribosomes?
Where protein synthesis takes place, making proteins needed in the cell.
What are Plant cells and describe them?
Is a eukaryote With a cell wall, permanent vacuole and chloroplast.
How do plant cells make their own food?
With special green structures called chloroplasts containing chlorophyll that trap light for photosynthesis
What is a cell wall?
Made of cellulose to strengthen the cell-> gives support.
What are chloroplasts?
Found in all green plants, they are green because they contain a pigment called chlorophyll.
What is Chlorophyll?
Green pigment and a plastid (orgenelle in chloroplasts) which absorb light and produce photosynthesis.
What is a Permanent Vacuole?
Space in the cytoplasm filled with cells sap to keep the cell rigid and saturated.
How do animal cells make thier own food?
They use their mitochondrea to covert glucose into energy
