Special Topics (Skin) Flashcards
1
Stratum basale
Keratinocytes stem cells
Transmit amplifying ones proliferate
2
Stratum spinosum
Keratinocytes start to flatten.
Keratin, int.f. and desmosome junctions.
8-10 layers
3
Stratum granulosum
Keratinocytes die.
Lamellar granules fuse to PM and release lipid rich secretions to help form barrier.
Keratohyalin - dark granules which help form keratin int. Filaments into keratin.
4
Stratum lucidum
Only thick skin.
5
Stratum corneum
Flattened, dead keratinocytes.
25-30 layers.
How often does stratification occur?
Once a month.
Where are melanocytes found?
BM on epidermal side.
What do melanocytes do?
Make melanosomes (which contain melanin) which are transferred to keratinocytes. Dendrites extend out to help transfer.
What are the 2 types of melanin?
Pheomelanin- yellow red
Eumelanin- brown black
What do Langerhans do?
Immune
Survey epidermis for foreign organisms then move them to the dermis to be destroyed.
What 4 things is the BM made of?
Collagen, perlecan, nidogen, laminin
What does epidermolysis bullosa cause?
Mutations in BM proteins
Name the 4 phases of healing
Inflammatory, migratory, proliferative, maturation
Name the 5 functions of skin
Barrier, holds blood, thermoregulation, sensation, vitamin D (modified by UV, made in liver)
