Special Population Test- Older Adults Flashcards
name special considerations that older adults have higher prevalence for (9)
-slower hemodynamic responses
-low functional capacity
-poor vision/hearing
-cognitive decline
-poor hand eye coordination
-dehydration
-cold injuries
-impaired foot sensation
-loneliness
define mobility disability
gap between individuals physical ability and environmental challenges (walking outdoors/on uneven surfaces)
name the lab aerobic assessments and their modifications
- Balke
- Bruce protocal holding handrails
- cycle ergometer
modifications: extend warm up by 3 mins, extend stages by 3 min to get SSHR, start at slower speed
Why do the cycle ergometer test?
good for those with poor balance, poor neuromuscular coordination or impaired vision
name 2 field aerobic assessments and their reliablity
- 6 min walking test, positively related to bruce protocal r=0.78
- 2 min step test, r=0.90 or test retest, and mod. correlated to rockport and bruce protocol
why strength train?
-lessens risk of falls
-lessen injuries associated with falling
-reduces age related loss of bone mineral
-maintain lean body tissue
-improves glucose utilization
-prevents obesity
-maintainas ADL & functional independance
is it safe to administer 1 RM MSK test
yes but consider
-fraility
-medications
-risk of injury
-chronic conditions (parkinsons)
who should not participat in a senior fitness test (4)
-those advised by doctors due to medical conditions
-congestive heart failure
-experiencing joint pain, chest pain, dizziness, or exertional angina during exercise
-uncontrolled BP >160/100
MSK tests (5)
-chair sit to stand
-arm curl test
-chair sit & reach
-back scratch test
-8 foot get up and go
when during the test do you perform 2 min step test or 6 min walk?
2 min step test is done 3rd (after arm curl) and 6 min walk test is done last. Only perform one of these aerobic tests.
8 foot get up and go test reliability
r=0.95
