encima de & sobre de.
The ceiling is above the floor.(And other meaning for one of those words?)
El techo (Tec floating at ceiling.Oh!) este encima del = sobre de suelo. (It sways low!). SUELO ALSO MEANS GROUND like in a wiggly house or in an earhquake
In front of…behind the…
In front of =Delante de OR al frente de.…

I had a motorcycle since I was thirteen.
Yo tenia una motocicleta desde que tenía trece años.
(desde can also mean from like pic was taken desde the window
OR it is 3 hours desde aqui
Words that can mean I/ you/ he/she/usted they, we WAS/were
referring to something that has happened and ended?
OR can mean WENT?
They come from SER when used as WAS
And from IR when used as WENT
Yo fui “I was …”
Tu fuiste “you were…”
El/ella/ Fue. “You/he/she
Usted. was”
Nosotros fuimos (fwee-mos) “We were..”
Were the event/ thing that was
is sharply demarkated, not still ongoing and not repeating regularly like a holiday and not referring to an object. Otherwise (if poorly demarkated, an object or regularly repeating then you’d use era which unlike fui, fue, fuimos, era can’t also mean went).
OR CAN MEAN I went (Yo fui) You went (Yo fuiste)
he/she/ usted (El… fue)
went
We went (Nosotros Fuimos)
- - - - -
Yo Era, el ella usted era, Ellos/Ellas eran: can mean WAS for things that don’t have a known sharp ending
I had a dream on the floor/ground.
Yo tenia un sueno al suelo.
Meaning of Yo fui?
I WAS (something that ended sharply) OR I WENT. Re: the “was” meaning, it should refer to something sharply demarcated in time that doesn’t repeat regularly and doesn’t refer to an object. Otherwise would use era for was.
Meaning of El/ Ella/usted Fue?
He/she WAS (something that
started and ended sharply ended and doesnt repeat/ not an object)
or
You (formal/usted) WAS (something that
ended and doesnt repeat)
or
You formal/usted WENT
The front of the bus vs in front of the bus
In front of the…=delante de…
in THE front of..= en el parte delantera de…
When Erik was eigbteen he went to Saint Petersburg Russia to study Russian for a fee months.
Cuando Erik tenía dieciocho años el fue a San Petersburgo, Rusia, para estudiar ruso durante unos meses.
Erik was… vs Erik was IN (a place) and other congugations
Erik WAS =Erik fue (or era for a sharply ended us longer period. Era also for Yo, nosotros eramos)…)
Erik Was IN France= ERIK ESTABA (or ESTUVE) EN (because it’s a place) en Francia.
(Would be
YO ESTUVE en Francia (short point in time) OR
YO ESTABA (longer period) en Francia.
and
NOSOTROS ESTAbamos en Francia
!!!!FUE vs ERA !!!
from HolaSpanish.com (some things can be era OR fue depending on how you use it)
1. Use ERA = the IMPERFECT=imperfecto tense = not known to be sharply ending period of verb SER=ERA for “was” when DESCRIBING
1.OBJECTS:
-La casa era blanca (The house was white).
-El coche era azul (The car was blue).
-El anillo era de oro (The ring was made of gold).
NONE KNOWN TO BE SHARPLY ENDING)
1.5 FOR DATES: Era Nov 15 quando…
- Use ERAN when describing a repetitive event (hence its multiple) like birthdays, Christmases, Halloweens, work parties, New Years, St Patty’s Days…NOT KNOWN TO BE SHARPLY ENDING…Xmases will continue)
- Also use ERA to DESCRIBE PEOPLE or things where you’re saying a person/thing “was” as= “USED TO BE” (BUT NOW….)
Eg:
-When she was a child she was timid but now she is socialable.
-He had blond hair but now it is brown.
-My TV was in my bedroom. Now its in my kitchen. BUT NOT SAYING EXACTLY WHEN THE CHANGE WAS
USE ERA when describing a past state or condition that was ongoing or habitual, with no precise beginning or end . Eg El era un buen estudiente.
Use ERA FOR “was”
bien
divertido
interessante
etc… AT LEAST WHEN DESCRIBING BOOKS, MOVIES, ETC.. because the book movie whatever is still a good or interesting or fun thing.
APPARENTLY ESTABA IS SIMILAR TO ERA But seems nobody can really tell when it is used as opposed to using era.
- - -
FUE while "fue" is used to describe a single, completed action or event in the past THAT HAS A PRECISE BEGINNING AND END
Use preterit /preterito tense of verb Ser= FUE for “was” for EVENTS OR THINGS OF A PARTICULAR DURATION
-a movie
-festival
-wedding
-conference
-course
-class or lesson
-a play
-a football game
-a day
etc.
YO FUI/ El Ellos/usted FUE AND NOSOTROS FUIMOS CAN ALSO MEAN “WENT”. NOT SO FOR ERA.
APPARENTLY ESTUVO IS LIKE FUE-SHARP DEMARCATED BUT NO ONE CAN SAY WHY TO USE ONE VS THE OTHER
Two meanings of al fondo?
at the back OR at the bottom
Floor of a room
vs
the 1st 2nd or 3rd floor of a house
suelo (floor of a room, or the ground)
piso eg el piso numero nueve
We were sick, we were in town…
Nosotros fuimos enferma,
Nosotros fuimos al pueblo
OR
Nosotros estabamos enferma
Nosotros estabamos al pueblo
!!!Not sure why what the difference is went to use one versus the other!!!!
I went to Paris 5 years ago
Hace cinco anos yo fui a Paris.
(if said “Hace cinco anos yo fui EN Paris” it would mean 5 years ago I was IN PARIS)

I have gone =Yo he ido

El/Ellos/usted ->ha ido
We have gone= Nosotros hemos
It was [a date like feb 19] ..
Era el diecinueve de febrero.
USE ERA FOR DATES
Which Estar past tenses is more like Fui/Fue/fuimos (of Ser) and which is more like era, eras. era,,eran, eramos
FOR US SHORTER THINGS WITH SHARP ENDINGS:= PERETERITE FORMS :
PERETERITE SER: Yo Fui, Tu fuiste, El/ella/isted fue, and nosotros fuimos = PERETERITE PAST OF SER. These can also
mean “WENT” unlike the other stuff.
and
PERETERITE ESTAR: Yo estuve, Tu estuvisye, el ella usted estuvo, nosotros estuvimos…. OF ESTAR
Are “pereterite” forms used for short things with known sharp endings
IMPERFECT = LONGER LASTING NO KNOWN SHARP ENDING FORMS OF SER AND ESTAR:
SER: Yo era, Tue eras, El era, Ellos eran , Eramos OF SER
and
ESTAR: Yo estaba, tu estabas, el ella usted estaba, nosotros Estabamos… are for longer things with no sharp ending ie imperfect forms indicating usually longer stuff in the past- stuff without a spp endpoint.
Era, eras, era, eran and eramos are imperfect froms of Ser (? think)
while
estaba is an imperfect form of estar, So (I think) they (estaba and era) both decribe things which DONT haVE a spp start and certainly don’t have a known sharp/ spp ending.
describing habitual states in the past/ stuff without a known precise ending.
We had
Nosotros teniamos (tenEEamos)
We are, we were
Nosotros estamos
Nosotros estabamos or fuimos

Nosotros fuimos a Paris el ano pasado
