Q

What is the role of bile in the digestive system?

A
  • neutralises the stomach acids
  • emulsifies lipids to break down large lipid globules into smaller ones
  • allows lipase to perform easier as it increases the surface area, increasing the breakdown of lipids

Q

How is the ileum adapted for its function?

A
  • has folded walls, villi and microvilli, to increase the surface area for maximum absorption of digested products
  • ileum is one cell thick, providing a short diffusion distance
  • capillaries are very close to the walls of the ileum, providing a short diffusion distance also maintaining the concentration gradient
  • has a lacteal which helps produce product of lipid digestion to be absorbed

Q

How can you investigate the population size of daffodils on Broadfield?

A
  • divide sampling area using measuring tapes to create a x and y axis
  • use a random number generator to generate coordinates
  • at each coordinate place a quadrat down and count the number of daffodils in the quadrat
  • repeat a large number of times, 20+
  • divide the total area of Broadfield by the area of a quadrat and times by the average number of daffodils to estimate the population size

Q

In order to germinate, the seeds need a food store. Why? And what might be in the food store?

A
  • needs a food store to respire to grow as has no leaves yet to photosynthesize
  • the food store must contain carbohydrates such as starch and proteins
